Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the three stages of LU Dz
- rebellious qi (ex. asthma, cough, bronchitis)
- distention of LU Qi (ex. emphysema)
- Xue Level (ex. pulmonary heart dz xue stasis blocking the heart)
From Qi–> blood level;
From LU–> HT
In terms of Wei Qi, what are the functions of the SP, KD, LU
SP is the source of wei qi
KD is the root of wei qi
LU disperses wei qi (ascends & descends)
Allergic rhinitis vs. the common cold
- generalized/localized
- Wei Qi affected
- Where are the symptoms
- Common cold more generalized with heachache, body aches, chills & fever, more wei and ying qi disorder
- allergy- more localized into 5 sense organs; wei qi stuck/congested
- symptoms of head and face in both
- Wei Qi affected in both
Allergic Rhinitis vs Common Cold
Similarities: Mechanisms: Symptoms: Family Hx: Associated Disease
Similarities: Mechanism- related to wei qi

Seasonal Tx of Cause/Root: LU/SP/KD Qi Xu
Wei Qi system disorder
*KD qi xu: chronic sob, weak back/knees, frequent urination, pale face, fatigue, weak and deep pulse in rear position
- Wei Qi SOURCE from Gu Qi (SP)
- Wei Qi SPREAD by LU
- KD is ROOT of Wei Qi
SP is the mother of LU; LU is the mother of KD
SP controls KD…. be sure to tonify the SP

Tx Xu and Shi at same time: pick 50% from symptomatic tx and 50% from cause/root tx
Asthma due to Wind cold invasion
s/s:
T:
P:
EXCESS condition; will cause ACUTE attack of chronic condition; Also d/t WH, W-dryness, W-Dampness
S/S: Acute onset; dyspnea, wheezing, cough with chest tightness, rapid and short breathing *chills, aversion to cold, slight fever, headaches, general aching, no thirst, no sweating, cough with white thin sputum
T: Normal with thin white or greasy white coat
P: Floating/Superficial &tight
Asthma due to Phlegm Heat
S/S:
T:
P:
EXCESS condition; *most common asthma pattern; usually refers to acute attack
- smokers and alcohol drinkers
- may derive from W-C turning into heat
S/S: Acute onset, dyspnea and wheezing, cough with profuse sticky thick yellow sputum, sensation of stuffiness in the chest, tightness (oppression); rough breath; strong and coarse voice; thirst with desire for cold drinks; dry mouth, bitter taste, bad breath; may have fever, nausea, and vomiting; Dark yellow urine; constipaiton
T: red or scarlet or no change with thick greasy yellow coat
P: rapid and slippery or wiry
*if severe may have purple lips or tongue
TX for Asthma due to Phlegm Heat
Resolve phlegm, clear heat, soothe asthma, descend lu qi
Points: (basic points) UB13, R17, R22, Ding Chuan + LI4, LI11, SJ5, P6, ST40, SP9, R12, DU14
Tx for Asthma due to Wind Cold
Eliminate W-C, Regulate (descend) LU Qi
UB13, R17, R22, Ding Chuan + LI4, LU7, UB12, GB20
- May use SMOKELESS moxa
Asthma due to LU Qi Xu
S/S:
T:
P:
DEFICIENCY condition; usually seen with prolonged and protracted cough that causes LU Qi Xu. CHRONIC condition
S/S: chronic onset, SOB and rapid breathing, difficulty inhaling, more exhale than inhale, wheezing and dyspnea, soft or weak voice, low/weak cough, pale face; fatigue, spontaneous sweat; easily catches colds
T: Pale with thin white or greasy white coat (if phlegm)
P: Deep and weak, weaker on R (1st [cun] position)
TX for Asthma due to LU Qi Xu
Tonify LU Qi to strengthen Wei Qi
UB13, R17, R22, Ding Chuan + LU9 (yuan), UB43, ST36, SP6, UB20, UB21 (if LU Qi Xu, SP is mother of LU- use to tonify MJ to tonify LU Qi); LI10 (ST36 of the arm)
Asthma due to KD Qi Xu
S/S:
T:
P:
DEFICIENCY condition; KD failing to grasp Qi (KD=root of breath); More Xu than LU Xu; symptoms of asthma are more severe.
S/S: chronic onset; severe wheezing and dyspnea, difficulty inhaling- inhaling with help of chest muscle: upon inhalation, obvious depress above clavicle, shrugs shoulders (more exhale than inhale); SOB, soft voice, fatigue; pale face, cold limbs; weakness/lassitude, esp of lower back and knees; incontinence of urine and stool; profuse, frequent urination, enuresis (in children)
T: pale, swollen, w/ teeth marks; thin white or white greasy coat
P: deep and weak
Alternative treatments for Asthma
Mid Summer Moxa: BL12/BL13/BL20/BL23/BL43

T: normal with thin white coat
P: superficial; tight
WC Excess vs WC Xu
Wind Cold Excess: no sweat, cold predominates
Wind Cold Xu: sweating, imbalance between ying qi and wei qi; floating and soft pulse possible, not tight, perhap not even floating; not enough qi
Points: LI4, LU7, GB20, UB12, UB13, SJ17, Taiyang + ST36, BL20, BL21, LI10

P: soft (floating, big w/o strength) or superficial and slippery
Cold due to Wind damp Tx
Remove wind-damp; regulate middle jiao
Points from yin meridians are okay to use- because damp has origins in SP and the pathogen is already inside. It will not drive deeper
LI4, P6, R12, ST25, ST36, ST40, SP9, SP6, UB12, UB20, UB21; Yintang, ST8- Damp Headaches
Cold due to Summer heat invasion
S/S
P:
T:
EXCESS condition
S/S: fever, slight chills or aversion to cold; GREAT profuse sweating, rough breath distending sensation in chest; nausea, vomit (esp in am); decreased appetite; great thirst; desire for cold drinks or no desire; restlessness; irritable; tossing and turning; BM is normal, constipated or loose; urine is scanty, yellow
T: red or scarlet with thick or greasy coat; yellow
P: forceful/full (or slippery) & rapid; overflowing in the HT position
Difference between Heat and Summer Heat
1- summer heat attacks the HT and PC directly- as a result there are more emotional/mental sx
2- there is more dampness w/ S-H
3- any heat after the summer solstice day is considered S-H
Combination of External pathogens and body deficiencies. W-H, W-C, W-D plus one or more of: Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang Xu. Remove external pathogen as specified for invasion plus:
Qi Xu points
Ren 17, LU9, UB13, 20, 23; ST36, LI10 (primarily w-d + pale face, sob, easy to catch cold, sweats easily, etc.)
