Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the four types of tissues in the human body?
- Epithelial 2. Connective 3. Nervous 4. Muscular
What are tissues made of?
A group of similar cells and cell products
What is histology?
The study of tissues and how they are arranged into organs
What are the three types of epithelial cells?
- Simple Squamous 2. Simple Cuboidal 3. Simple Columnar
What is the shape of squamous cells?
Thin scaly cells
What is the shape of cuboidal cells?
Square or round cells
What is the shape of columnar cells?
Tall narrow cells
What are the special features of epithelial tissue?
- Lack Blood Vessels
- Get nourishment through diffusion
What are the two types of layers in epithelial tissue?
- Simple 2. Stratified
What are the two main functions of simple squamous epithelial tissue?
- Permit rapid diffusion 2. Secrete serous fluid
What are the three main function of the simple cuboidal epithelial tissue?
- Absorption and secretion 2. Mucus and production 3. Movement
What are the two main function of the simple columnar epithelial tissue?
- Absorption and secretion 2. Mucus Secretion
Can you name two organs where simple squamous epithelial tissues are found?
- Lungs 2. Skin
Can you name two organs that contain stratified squamous epithelial tissue?
- Epidermis 2. Tongue
Can you name two organs that contain simple cuboidal epithelial tissue?
- Liver 2. Thyroid
Can you name two organs that contain stratified cuboidal epithelial tissue?
- Sweat gland ducts 2. Ovaries
Can you name two organs that contain simple columnar epithelial tissue?
- Uterus 2. Kidney
What is transitional epithelial tissue?
Multilayered epithelium that change from round to flat when stretched
Can you name one organ where we can find transitional epithelial tissue?
The Bladder
Regarding epithelial tissue, what is the basement membrane?
The layer between an epithelium and the underlying connective tissue
Is the extracellular matrix of epithelial tissue abundant or scarce?
It is so thin it is not visible with a light microscope
Given the location and function of epithelial tissue, why is it beneficial that it has a high rate of mitosis?
They are constantly damaged, and need a high rate mitosis to replace damaged cells
What is a gap junction?
A cell junction where adjacent cells are connected through protein channels
What is the function of gap junctions?
Connect cells together so molecules may pass from one cell to the other
What is a tight junction?
Areas where the membranes of two adjacent cells join together to form a barrier
What are the two functions of tight junctions?
- Help form a barrier that prevents molecules from getting through 2. Stop the proteins in the cell membrane from moving around
Does epithelial tissue have a lot of blood vessels?
They allow no room for blood vessels
What are the four types of connective tissue?
- Fibrous 2. Cartilage 3. Bone 4. Blood
What is the main cell type found in fibrous connective tissue?
Fibroblasts
What is the main difference between dense and loose connective tissue?
Dense connective tissue have abundant collagenous fibers; loose connective tissues are scarce
What are the 3 types of fibers found in the matrix of fibrous connective tissue?
- Collagenous 2. Reticular 3. Elastic
Can you name one organ where dense regular fibrous connective tissue is found?
The Tendons
Can you name one organ where dense irregular fibrous connective tissue is found?
The dermis
What are the 3 types of cartilage found in the human body?
- Hyaline 2. Elastic 3. Fibrocartilage
What are the two cell types that make cartilage?
- Chondroblasts 2. Chondrocytes
What is one organ where hyaline cartilage is found?
The Trachea
What is one organ where fibrocartilage is found?
The Intervertebral Discs
What is one organ where the elastic cartilage is found?
Epiglottis
Besides fibers, what other substance is found in the matrix of cartilage?
Chondroitin Sulfate
What are the three main function of hyaline cartilage?
- Eases joint movements 2. Holds airway open 3. Moves vocal cords during speech
What are the two main function of fibrocartilage?
- Resists compression 2. Absorbs shock
What is the main function of elastic cartilage?
Provides flexible, elastic support
What is the main function of the chondroblasts?
To produce and maintain the cartilage matrix
What are the 3 types of cells found in bone tissue?
- Erythrocytes 2. Leukocytes 3. Platelets
Besides fibers, what other substance is found in the matrix of bone tissue?
- Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) 2. Proteoglycan 3. Adhesive Glycoproteins
What is a chondrocyte?
Cartilage cells in the lacunae
What is the main function of the osteoblasts?
Produce bone matrix and result in increases of bone mass
