Dyspepsia

A

Signs and symptoms:

  • burning sensation
  • full/bloated

Red flags:

  • Ingestion of NSAIDs
  • Family history of cancer (GI)
  • Severe or persistant dyspepsia
  • Unexplained weight loss
Treatment:
Non Pharmacological:
- lifestyle modifications
- Healthy eating
- Weight reduction
- Quit smoking
- limit alcohol intake 
- Avoid food/factors that cause the dyspepsia
Pharmacological 
- Antacid
- PPI

Goals:
- Relief of symptoms

Recommendation:

  • Antacid
  • PPI

Counselling:

  • Not sure
  • How to use
  • Counsel on side effects
  • How long until the patient should expects symptom relief

Advice:

  • Non-pharmacological treatment
  • Not sure

Monitoring

  • Efficacy
    • You know the treatment works when the symptoms are gone
  • Safety
    • Make sure medicine is doing no harm
    • Check for side effects
