EXAM-Biology Ch. 9: Genetics Flashcards
What are the differences between homozygous and heterozygous alleles?
Homozygous- 2 similar alleles (TT or tt)
Heterozygous- 2 alleles that are different (Tt)
In Mendel’s experiments, what were the results of the F1 generation?
The results showed only the dominant (purple) trait
What do the letters Tt represent?
Each letter represents one allele. This is a heterozygous individual
In a punnet square, what do the letters inside the box represent?
The offspring of a cross
What are the parts of a chromosome?
2 chromatids and a centromere
Who is Gregor Mendel?
The father of genetics; worked with pea plants
What are the differences between dominant and recessive?
Dominant masks recessive
Recessive is masked by dominant allele
What is a phenotype? What is a genotype?
Phenotype- physical appearance of an organism based on the genotype
Genotype- the genetics of an organism
What is the difference between a monohybrid and dihybrid cross?
Monohybrid- involves only 1 trait
Dihybrid- crosses of 2 traits
