EXAM-Biology Ch.10: Nucleic Acids&Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What is molecule of DNA made of?
Deoxyribose sugar Nitrogenous base (A, T, C, G)
What is the primary function of DNA?
To store & transmit genetic information
What is DNA named for?
Deoxyribose sugar
Who are Watson and Crick?
Discovered the structure of DNA (double helix)
What are the bases in DNA? RNA?
DNA- A,T,C,G
RNA- A,U,C,G
How do the bases pair up?
DNA- A➡T, G➡C
RNA- A➡U, G➡C
What are the differences between DNA and RNA?
DNA- 2 strands, deoxyribose
RNA- 1 strand, ribose
What is the function of the types of RNA (tRNA, mRNA, rRNA)?
1) tRNA-brings correct amino acids to ribosome
2) mRNA-takes info. from DNA out of autosomes
3) rRNA- what ribosomes are made of
What happens during transcription?
DNA is copied into a strand of mRNA
What happens during translation?
The mRNA is read by the ribosome. The tRNA matches amino acids to the codon on mRNA to make a protein.
