excretory system Flashcards
the function
excretion is the process of removing waste from your body
the main organs of excretion
kidneys, lungs, liver, skin
what are the kidneys and what do they do
kidneys are bean shaped organs that filters blood. There are two main outputs: clean blood and urine
what is a nephron
tiny structures that filters blood located in the kidneys
what is waste
anything that needs to be removed from the body (urine)
what’s metabolism
a chemical reaction that occurs in the body that converts food into energy by breaking it down.
what’s urine and what happens if it isn’t removed
a waste made up of water, salt and urea and bits of blood breakdown. If it isn’t excreted it could damage our body
ammonia and urea
and how is ammonia converted to urea
ammonia = toxic
urea = safe
When protein is broken down it is broken down into these molecules called amino acids, the liver than breaks these down into different substances one of them being ammonia. The liver than uses energy to convert it into urea.
organs and their order
- aorta
- kidney: filters blood, produces urine
- renee veins
- ureter: tube that carries urine to the bladder
- bladder: stores urine
- urethra carries urine out of the body
