A

When indv receives social support, having an ally gives us confidence and support to resist pressures to confirm or obey and remain independent in our bhv

A
  • indv must identify with ally and see them as a role model of behaving independently to resist conforming
  • indv with support for their pov no longer fears being ridiculed, allowing them to avoid NSI

How does an indv resist obedience?

A
  • a person can resist obedience and act from their own conscience if they have an ally that acts as a model of dissent for indv to copy
  • when other allies are present acting in the same way, this leads to diffusion of responsibility where indv will feel less responsible abt their actions

  • there is a scale of LOC, with int at one end and ext at the other

  • indv believes what happens to them is determined by external factors such as luck or fate
  • put more trust into decisions of authority figures than themselves
  • take less personal responsibility for their actions so less likely to remain independent in their bhv so less able to resist social influence
