Q

“Our brains ache, in the _________ ____ ____ _____ ____ _____ __…”

A

“Merciless Iced East winds that knive us…” - In the world of developing technology for weapons and armour, a knife is a pretty crude way of killing someone. Personification is used on the wind. “East” is important because, in the Allies’ trenches, the British and the French would have been facing west, towards the Germans. Owen is suggesting that the wind would have been egging them on, over No Man’s Land and towards their certain death.
