Farming, Measurong Pollution Flashcards
What do fertilisers do?
Increase plant yield- can wash out of soils and pollute rivers
Pesticides
Increases plant yield by stopping pests from eating or competing with crop plants - can distort non pest species and lead to bioaccumulation
Disease control?
Prevents losses of plants and animals - antibiotics can still be found in meat
Battery metods?
Less room to move-
Less wasted energy-
Less food needed-
Reduced costs
Poor QOL for animals
For and against culling badgers?
For: Badgers pass on bTB to cattle
Many cattle die each year
Against: not always effective.
Surviving badgers can move to other areas spreading the disease
Vaccination may be more effective
How can pollution in rivers and streams be measured?
Changes in pH
Changes in oxygen levels
Indicator species
What are Lichens sensitive to?
SO2
Zones of pollution??
From 0-6
0 = heavy pollution/ high SO2 levels
6= clean air/ low SO2 levels
What do fungicides do?
Kill fungi that cause plant disease
What do herbicides do?
Reduce competition for water and light between pest plants and crops
What is in fertilisers?
Nitrates and phosphates
What if the form of DNA?
- Coiled double helix
- Phosphates and sugar form the backbone
- C and G always bond- as they have 3 bonds
- A and T always bond as they have 2 bonds
What is a chromosome?
- Long strands of DNA
- Come as identical homologous pairs(except sex chromosomes)
- 23 pairs (46 all together)
What is an allele?
Difference types of genes
Four bases of DNA?
A = Adenine C= Cytosine G = Guanine T = Thymine
