Maintain law and order, they establish courts, and provide for public welfare
What can a federal government do?
Declare war, establish foreign policy, and regulate interest
What can state governments do?
Establish local governments, provide for public safety, and regulate business with states
What is Dual Federalism?
It’s when state and federal governments were co-equal with distinct policy boundaries
What is co-operative federalism?
The ‘new deal’ is where the federal government took direct responsibility in matters such as unemployment benefits and providing local schools.
What is New Federalism?
This is where the powers of federal government would be rolled back and returned to the States.
Advantages of federalism
The states have power over the provision of medical insurance
Federalism ensures that states governments would still function independently
Laws differ across states
Disadvantages of federalism
Healthcare provision is heavily dependent on federal funding
Lack of accountability
State citizens must pay federal income tax
