feminism and education Flashcards
feminist perspective of education?
- education is a form of social control
- in the past women denied the right to education ad their role was seen as a house wife
- they believe that the lack of education leaves women venerable to exploitation by men and the patriarchy
Heaton and lawson - hidden curriculum?
argued that the hidden curriculum taught patriarchal values in schools
- feminists claim the hidden agenda acts as a tool for gender stereotyping in schools, done through textbooks and how storybooks portray boys as active and girls domestic or invisible
liberal feminism ?
focused on how education discriminated against women as they were only taught subjects such as domestic sciences whilst boys were taught physics
- fights for human rights in education
criticisms of liberal feminists?
- ignores that discrimination still exists especially in higher education where women are still choosing degrees that lead to a less well paid job
marxist feminist ?
- lack of positive role models in schools, gendered language in school, gendered role books, girls are made to feel uncomfortable in male subjects, invisibility of women in the curriculum
radical feminism ?
- believe women are oppressed in education and society due to patriarchy
- men dominate social spaces and are more dominant towards women who challenge male dominance
- research also looks ar sexual harassment in education and how it is not treated as seriously as other forms of bullying
criticism of marxists feminists?
- ignores all the good that has been done and the equality legislation in schools
criticisms of radical feminism?
- can’t generalise all men as predatory
- deterministic and don’t recognise women have freewill
why are feminists concerned about girls in education?
girls are outperforming boys but feminists are still concerned about girls experiences in education
- girls far less likely to take subjects such as physics and maths at a level but more likely to take art based subjects.
- women still underpaid compared to men meaning the9r educational advantage does not serve as well as was previously thought
