fieldwork Flashcards

Q

Data presentation methods

A

-EQA produced proportional symbols on a map, giving CLEAR and SPATIAL UNDERSTANDING.
-Questionnaire using random sampling strategy to avoid being biased and a piechart, which represented the data clearly. We collated the data from a total of 40 opinions which gave us a wider representative. However, our sampling strategy could have caused a poor representative because it was random, so perhaps we could have used stratified sampling which could have improved the probability of not acquiring a poor representative.
- Land Use Map Was effective in showing the proportion of buildings for tourism over the need of the locals from a general perspective, however, it was difficult to identify the service of multipurpose buidlings or shops that were closed.

Q

Study Location

A

West Lulworth, South Coast, Dorset Jurrasic Coastline. Appropriate because of enormous honey pot site for tourism because of the attractive scenery and picturesque costal features. Perfect for Tourism analysis.

Q

Risk Assessment

A

DONT GO IN THE WATER- Risk of drowning.

Busy Roads, be careful of cars when crossing.

Weather may impact danger of slipping, so wear appropriate footwear.

Q

Random Sampling

A

Equal probability each member of the population will be included

Advantage: least biased
Disadvantage: can lead to a poor representation because its random. This can be reduced by repeating this at different times and taking averages.

Q

Systematic Sampling

A

Observations made at regular intervals, e.g. asking every fifth person a question.

Advantages: provides spatial balance, and good coverage of area.
Disadvantage: Easy to miss variation (Not Representative)

Q

Stratified Sampling

A

Where proportionate number of observations are taken from each part/category of the population.

Advantages: generates results which are more representative over wider spread of different people with different purposes.
Disadvantage: difficult to know the size of subgroups for proportion, which is essential.

Q

Land use survey (Quantitative)

A

Shows us the vast the majority of shops and services accomodate for tourists needs over locals.

Limitation: not enough time to visit all the village (residential area) so not balanced proportionatly between subgroups of the area.

Q

EQA environmental quality assessment

A

scale of 0-4, and we did this at a range of places, which provides useful for comparitive purposes. Made it clear areas of tourism more impacted.

Limitations: very subjective
Areas analysed need to be done at different times in the day and months of the year but not enough time.

Q

Questionnaire

A

Allowed us to get a range of opinions which were given as a rating on a scale of 2 and -2, collated into a sample of 40 people which gave a large representative. The random sampling avoided being biased.

Limitations: some people showed disinterest/ less effort than others.

Perhaps stratified sampling would give (on average) a better representative

Q

Field Sketch

A

Gave us a good, hollistic overview of the entire area.

Limitations: not everything can be captured in 1 sketch- subjective to the creator.
Picture would be more accurate.

Q

Car park count

A

247 cars in the carpark showed us the great income from tourism per day, equating to approximately 25,000 pounds per day.

Limitations: needs to be done at different times during the year, because it is extremely dependent on weather and season, making the number fluctuate enormously.
