What are the benefits and drawbacks of standardized testing?

A

Benefits: Benefits of standardized testing include that many tests measure goals and progress to those goals. Large amounts of students tested allow for comparisons to be made and resources to be allotted where they are needed. Standardized tests are cost-effective because they are administered and scored uniformly. Without testing, there is no way to make sure students and schools are held accountable.
Drawbacks: Drawbacks of standardized testing include, the results are often misused, the tests are poorly constructed. They often reduce the curriculum, there is inadequate evidence to show a correlation between rising test scores and increasing learning. Test taking skills have an undetermined effect on rising scores. Low-income students predictably score lower than students of higher socio-economic status. Teachers generally support standards but undue pressure can undermine productivity. They don’t measure other important concepts.
