Span of control
Appropriate # of employees that can be managed by one supervisor
Traditional model of employee supervision
A model that emphasizes clear rules and regulations, division of labor, span of control, delegation of authority, & employee specialization w/in organization
Delegation of authority
Clearly defining tasks and responsibilities of employees and delegating power and authority
Supportive supervisor
Supervisor who supports employees & serves as a potential buffer between employees & management
Occupational socialization
Process by which a person acquires the attitudes & behaviors of an ongoing occupational social system
Organizational culture
Set of assumptions & beliefs shared by the members of an organization
Social or informal sanctions
Peer disapproval of a group member manifested by some form of social punishment ex. Gossip or being ignored
Socialization process
1st stage anticipatory socialization looking forward to demands & expectations of future job
2nd formal socialization formalized training
3rd ongoing stage of informal socialization everyone worker is exposed to peers or managers
Power holder
One who has power in an organization
Power recipient
Receiver of an expression of power from power holder
Coercive power
The use or threat of punishment or actual punishment to gain compliance in an organization
Legitimate power
Use of power based on the internalized beliefs of a power recipient to gain compliance
Expert power
Power recipients belief that the power holder has specialized knowledge in a specific area that allows compliance to be gained
Personal conflict
Cognitive dissonance w/in individual
Conflict
Dynamic process in which two or more people in organization interact in a such a way as to produce conflict episodes that may or may not lead to hostile behaviors
Group conflict
Members of a group disagree on some common point of interest
Task conflict
Disagreements regarding the content of tasks being performed by group members
