Symbolism
Symbol is the use of an object to represent a larger more abstract idea
Ex: rain in f451
Alliteration
Repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of the words /use to draw attention to certain phrases/words
Ex:friends can be simple superficial and senseless
Metaphor
Comparison between 2 objects; the comparison usually allows the reader to understand the original object more clearly
Ex:her hair was a flowing river
Simile
Comparison between 2 objects using like or as
Ex: her hair was flowing LIKE a flowing river
Irony
Something considered to be ironic when it is the exact opposite of what is expected
Ex: if a dentist has rotting teeth
Allegory
Is a symbolic story;used to explain a bigger idea or truth
Ex: allegory of the cave (shadows)
Foreshadowing
When the author hints at what will happen later
Ex: mechanical hound outside door; someone knows
Allusion
Reference to another piece of literature
Ex: F451 allusion to the bible
Personification
Author gives human qualities to an object
Ex: the flowers danced in the breeze
Theme
Message that the author is trying to relay to the reader through his/her text
Ex: be cautious of our use of tech F451
Internal conflict
Person v. Self
Making a decision or wondering what to do about a situation
Ex: Montag when Mildred overdoses
External conflict
Three types
1) person v person: when 2 people are engaged in a fight w/ one and other
2) person v society: when a person struggles against a larger social issue
3) person v nature: when a person struggle against natural forces such as a thunderstorm or a tornado
Ex: Montag has p to p conflict when Mildred won’t call Beatty
Ex: Montag has p to s conflict when he decides to go and live on the other side of the tracks
