Final Exam Flashcards
Where can E-Coli be found?
In the intestines of cattle
Building Codes
Regulate building methods and materials used
Housing Codes
Regulate the way we live in and maintain those homes
Zoning Regulations
Ensures the land use plan for the community is followed
Purpose of p-traps
P-traps are piping below sinks and toilets and they provide a water seal between the home and the sewer. Toxic gases are prevented from entering the home.
Chimney height
They must extend 2-3 feet above the highest point if the house or any structure within 20 feet
Mold Growth
Most likely grows where there is water or dampness
Black mold appears in warm and humid areas
Input Control
Concentrates on preventing or reducing the severity of air pollution
Ex: controlling population growth, reducing demand for energy, recycling, etc.
Output Control
Concentrates on treating the symptoms after the fact
Ex: improved emissions Control, using scrubbers to remove pollutant after combustion, adding lime to raise the pH of lakes, streams and soils damaged by acid rain.
Air Pollution History
The 19th century (1800’s) and the industrial revolution
Heavy burning of wood and coal
Caused disease and death
Thermal Inversion
Warm air from the south and cooler air from the north collide over the wasatch front.
Higher levels of souther warm air flows over the lower levels of northern cooler air, creating the inversion.
Traps pollutants beneath layers of warm and cool air so pollutant can’t rise and disperse
Exacerbated Diseases by Air Pollution
Asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, heart disorders
Chlorofluorocarbons
Contain chlorine which is released in the atmosphere, interacting with ozone to form oxygen which does not protect us from UV radiation.
Chemicals that precipitate acid in the atmosphere
Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides
