What is a “Fire Survival Guidance (FSG) call”?
A Fire Survival Guidance (FSG) call occurs when a caller believes that they are unable to leave their premises due to the effects of fire.

What information will Brigade Control attempt to obtain and relay to attending crews?
- number of flat/house
- number of persons involved
- location of caller within premises and access point
- condition at their location e.g. heavy smoke, slight smoke
- proximity to fire if known
- latest advice given by control
- time of FSG call
- time updated.

What should the Initial Command Pump (ICP) radio operator do if given information about an FSG call by Brigade Control?
Inform IC immediately
Record information passed to them on a ‘Control Information Form’.
FSGs messages must be repeated back to Brigade Control to confirm the information is correct

What is the PDA for FSG calls?
- 1 x Pump Ladder (WM in charge)
- 1 x Command Units
- 1 x Station managers (SM)
This will be in addition to the PDA for ‘Persons reported’

Where should the ICP radio operator write down the information passed to them?
Control Information Form carried in the cab of all front line appliances

In the event that Brigade Control does not get a response from the ICP, what would be their actions?
They will contact an appliance en-route and pass the FSG information to them.The IC should inform Brigade Control that they have received the FSG information

What are the communication methods between Brigade Control and the Incident ground?
- Firelink Radio
- If control has resources then M2FH FLON-OPS-01 could be used to free up the main scheme if there are a large number of FSG calls
- Brigade mobile phone
- Fixed phones on CU
- CSS conferencing facility
- Command unit critical phone line – only for life critical information.
- CU fax

Message from Brigade Control “(callsign) from M2FN priority, Fire Survival Guidance Call Information”.
“(callsign) from M2FN Fire Survival Guidance caller in flat 61, 2 persons in a maisonette, in rear bedroom access by front door on 5th floor, premises filling with smoke, above scene of fire, advised to stay by window, call received at 2300. Additional information bedroom window faces canal”.

What fire ground radio channel should you consider using if channel 1 is busy?
A request should be made to the IC for channel 3 to be used.

Can the Command Unit assigned for FSG’s be changed?
Yes !
FSG’s are a priority and a CU already in attendance or the first on scene should be considered to deal with FSG calls
