Q

physical causes of flooding

A
  • heavy, prolonged rainfall (brought by mid-latitude depressions)
  • intese storms=flah flooding due to low pressure systems
  • monsoonal rainfall (wind system blowing from sea to land effecting asia from may-sept)=large scale rainfall
  • snowmelt=increased discharge
  • arrival of ITCZ (low pressure system)

Q

human actions exacerbating flooding

A
  • deforestion=increases magnitude as trees act as flood defence and water storage as involved in the hydrological cycle
  • river mismanagement i.e. channelisation and straightening increasing risk downstream
  • urbanisation
