Forces and motion Flashcards
What is a vector ?
A quantity with both magnitude and direction
Can you give examples of a vector
- velocity
- weight
- force
- acceleration
- momentum
- displacement
What is a scalar ?
A quantity with only magnitude
Can you give an example of a scalar
- speed
- distance
- mass
- temperature
- time
- energy
What can energy do ?
Energy can be transferred from one store to another
What is acceleration
Acceleration is a change in velocity each second
What is kinetic energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of movement
How is change in gravitational potential energy calculated ?
It is calculated using weight and height
What is force
Force is a push, pull or twist
What is momentum?
Momentum is the tendency of an object to keep moving in the same direction (newtons second law)
What is inertia?
Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist acceleration ( Newton’s first law)
• the greater the mass the greater the inertia
What is friction
Friction is resistive force that slows things down
- opposite direction the object is moving
What is “work done”
“Work done” is energy transferred
