Horace: Epode IX - A Toast to Actium

A

A Roman - you’ll no credit it, posterity -
Sadly, ups sticks and arms himself,
For a woman’s sake, and through a soldier, deigns
To serve the withered eunuchs
Among the warlike standards…

…Let’s delight in banishing fear and anxiety
For Caesar’s affairs, with sweet wine

Ode 4.15

A

Our ease, while Caesar o’er the world keeps ward,
Ne’er shall mad civic strife or violence
Disturb, nor anger, forger of the sword,
That ‘twixt unhappy cities breeds offence

Virgil’s Aeneid

A

On one side Augustus Caesar stands on the high stern, leading the Italians to the conflict, with him the Senate, the People, the household gods, the great gods, his happy brow shoots out twin flames, and his father’s star is shown on his head
On the other side Antony, with barbarous wealth and strange weapons … with … horror! … an Egyptian wife
The queen in the centre with monstrous gods of every kind brandsh their outrageous weapons against Neptune, Venus, and Minerva. Mars rages in the centre of the contest…
From this glorious source a Trojan Caesar will be born, who will bound … his fame with the stars, Augustus, a Julius…
… he is fated to hold a place nearest the light, first to rise to the upper air, sharing Italian blood

Strabo

A

Here too, at the foot of the hill is a plain which contains a sacred grove and a naval station, the naval station where Caesar dedicated as first fruits of his victory the squadron of ten ships
