Fungi Flashcards
Why are fungi put into the same kingdom.
- Similar ecological roles as decomposers
- Similar anatomy and biochemical features
What are Characteristics of Fungi
- Found EVERYWHERE (invisible)
- Heterotrophic (can’t make own food)
- Saprotrophic (feed on dead organic matter)
- Some are parasitic
- Symbiotic relationships
Define symbiosis
A close relationship between 2 unrelated organisms
What are the 3 types of symbiotic relationships
- Mutualism (both benefit)
- Parasitism (1 benefit, 1 harmed)
- Commensalism (1 benefit, 1 unharmed)
How can fungi reproduce
- Asexually (most common)
- Sexually (only if HAVE to)
- Budding
What are some types of fungi
Yeast, rust, smuts, mounds, mushrooms
How do Fungi feed
On dead organic matter, they release digestive enzymes that break down the organic matter. This is called extracellular digestion
Give an example of a symbiotic relationships with fungi
Lichen (fungi and algae)
What is the structure of Fungi
- mostly multicellular
- consists of mass of branched filaments called hyphae
- reproduces with spores
- mycelium network
What is mycelium
A network of hyphae
What is another name for Thrush
Candidiasis
What are effects of a candida infection
- affects the mucous membranes
- makes someone vulnerable to HIV
What is Candida kept in check by in the body
- Immune system
- Bacteria inside the intestine
What can cause a candida outgrowth
- Antibiotics
- AIDS
- Stress or poor diet
- Warmth and moisture
How is thrush treated
Anti fungal medications
