Q

How does fungi grow?

A

Spores germinate to form hyphae (one cell wide;rectangular). The hyphae grows, and duplicate and is all over. All of the hyphaes together create fungal tissue that is called Mycelium.

Q

What is Zygomycetes?

A

it is a type of fungi. It is bread mold and pilobolus. It creates a little stock with spores at the top and then throws the spores up to a meter. The stocks are about 2-10 mm tall.

Q

what is ascomycetes?

A

It is food spoilage mold. Asc means bag or sack. an example of this is the dutch elm disease that was brought by europeans to elm trees and it kills the trees. Ergot is a seep with spores on the inside. If there is a disease, such as St Antony’s fire, the disease is in flour and cases hallucinations and bad circulation.

Q

What is basidiomycetes

A

this is a button mushroom. It has gills that contains spores. puff balls are also basidiomycetes. These two things are edible. This fungi is a shelf fungi.

Q

What is deuteromycetes?

A

it is an “imperfect fungi”. It reproduces asexually. It is the blue inside of blue cheese. Some examples are Candida albicans that can cause disease, ring worm which is a fungal disease, or penecillium that grows on oranges.

Q

How do you set up a mold farm?

A
  1. Get a plastic bag and put your name, section, and date on it.
  2. put in a piece of bread and moisten it with water.
  3. put a piece of cheese on one half and a slice of an orange on the other half.
  4. Fill up the bag with air, close it, and set it where it will get some light.

Q

How do you set up Pilobolus and what is a special requirement of this fungi?

A
  1. You must put some poop in a cup and cover it with Saran Wrap.
  2. Then you need to cover it with paper towels and put a rubber band around the cup. Poke a small hole in the top of the paper towel so a little light can get through.
This fungi requires a little bit of light, which is where the zygomycetes will shoot the spores.

Q

What is mycorrhizae?

A

It is a fungi that attaches to the root of plants. It is a fungal hyphae. The fungus gets food from the plant in form of sugars. The plant benefits from mycrorrhizae from root extension, grow faster, more area for uptake of water and nutrients.
