Curation:List three things that a curator would do in the setting up of an exhibition that are the curators primary responsibility?

A

-A curator is a person who gathers information on the relevant work and has the important role of selecting the art pieces from around the world to form a show and display the work

-deciding on the themes and ideas and in interpreting the art collection in order to inform, educate and inspire the public.
give interesting speeches and guided tours.

-making sure it is organised in a manner that speaks to the viewer physically, emotionally and intellectually to tell a story but most important to give the viewer an visceral experience. To make the experience the best it can be, the architecture, lighting and wall colours need to seem seamless and natural so the viewer is not drawn to anything but the art

Q

What maximum lux levels are appropriate for a paper work in a public gallery? What other materials require the same lux level limit? What might happen if this limit is exceeded?

A

Some materials are affected more drastically than others, works on paper and textiles require a lower light level of 50 lux. More solid materials such as stone, glass, ceramic and metal can accommodate almost any light level range
If you exceed lux levels it will change the artwork by making it yellow

Q

What is the acceptable range of humidity in a public gallery? What might happen if this limit is exceeded?

A

The perfect climate for most mudiens is 50%. However most galleries leave an allowance of + or - of 10% . 50% is the ideal climate as below 40% on organic materials such as paper, wood, leather, animal glue makes the artworld become brittle, dry out and may split which is clearly not ideal when handling any precious artworks for future generations.

Fluctuating humidity can result in many disastrous outcomes. As organic materials constilt absorb and de-absorb moisture will make it swell and shrink, which will result in the artwork weakening, splitting and flaking

Q

What is the acceptable range of temperature in a public gallery? What might happen if this limit is exceeded?

A

Optimum temperature for almost all mudiems is 20 degrees celsius with an allowance of + or - 2 degrees. Different temperatures that are not 20 degrees can result in paper, textiles, leather, wood and paint becoming dark, brittle and can crumble.

Q

In what ways are the environmental conditions in art storage spaces in a public gallery different from the environmental conditions in the exhibition spaces of a public gallery? Why?

A

In order to protect the artworks they galleries need to ensure that the artworks are not in danger of pests. The galleries need to make sure they are monitoring traps to record the types of activity of the pests and cleaning surfaces and not allowing visitors to take in food and drinks when looking at the art pieces.
Such expenses that a commercial gallery would not be able to afford

Handling and movement of artworks and artefacts is minimised wherever possible, as this reduces the risk of any damage to the work.
