Expose patient from nipples to knees sitting upright on the examination couch

Palmar erythema
Dupuytren’s contracture
Liver flap
Arms
Radial pulse: rate and rhythm
Eyes
Scleral jaundice
Conjunctival pallor
Mouth
Angualr stomatitis
Atrophic glossitis of the tongue
Mouth ulcers
Dentition status
Neck
Lymph nodes
- submandibular
- cervical chain
- supraclavicular
Then check spider naevi
After neck and spider naevi
Ask patient to lie flat after altering back rest of the examination couch
Abdomen observation
Scars
Distension
Caput medusae
Palpation
Superficial then deep
9 areas
Organs
Liver, spleen
Ask patient to breath in and out, moving towards organ on inspiration
Kidneys
Ballot kidneys left and right
If abdominal distension
Perform shifting dullness
Auscultation
Bowel sounds
In one area around umbilicus
Listen for up to 1 minute
Further examinations
Hernial orifices
External genitalia
Rectal examination
