GB Germs Flashcards
. Are babies born with a normal “microflora” of bacteria?Where do the bacteria in a newborn’s mouth most likely originate?
No its acquired ,First sip of breast milk and birthing (mother’s mouths, maybe)
Purpose for nasal mucus??? Purpose for ciliated epithelial cells in the upper respiratory tract???
- Traps dust and kills pathogens
- Propel trap microbes to the back of the throat where they can be swallowed of coughed
What oxygen class of bacteria makes up the majority of our large intestine’s ecosystem? How are they helpful to us? How can they be harmful?
- Anaerobe
- Help digest nutrients and calories that otherwise wouldn’t be digestible
- Oppurtanisicit- there okay in there normal place unless they are not in the normal place
The low pH of our stomachs is very protective in that it kills the vast majority of bacteria. Based on this fact…How is it that a newborn baby’s small and large intestine are colonized by bacteria???
Stomach acid secretion doesn’t begin until three mounths of age
Helicobacter pylori
how doesH. pylori “defy” Koch’s Postulates?
Stomach bug,
Inability to infect every healthy host when administered; some people remain asymptomatic for years.
Three reasons why Antibiotics don’t work
Maturation of attached bacteria into a differentiated biofilm?
- afailure of an agent to penetrate the full depth of the biofilm.
- anti biotics only kill planktonic cells released by the biofilms it doesn’t kill the bio film
