Once a distinct settlement however not now due to the growth, difficult to seperate from Carlton

‘Gedling past and present’, 1879. Gedling is constantly changing.

Example: the lyrics about crossroads ‘ but it wants two new sides and a good new top’.

Suggests cross roads are going under construction so Gedling is constantly changing.

Strong sense of community and nostalgia is evident in the online forum ‘Nottstalgia’

Fond memories were created.

Example: One person said ‘ I remember watching the moon landing footage in 1969 in the Coop all in black and white.’

Which creates place meaning as people as people associate Gedling with a nostalgic feeling.

How has Gedling been shaped by its past and present connections ?

  • Until 19th century Gedling’s main source of income was agriculture and the canal industry

1750, lace was brought to Nottingham

Gedling’s railway station was built in 1875 to make it easier for residents to commute

1900s Gedling colliery was introduced, mining industry replaced agriculture, known as the pit of nations, pit closed in 1992.

Gedling today is more humanitarian rather than industrial.

How is Gedling connected to other places by road and rail ? Have these connections changed over the years ?

A

1875 Gedling railway station opened connected residents to cities/towns outside of Nottingham e.g Skegness. Shut in 1924.

1956, following housing demand main lanes e.g Wood lane were rebuilt as proper roads rather than dirt tracks.

Gedling access road was constructed and finished in 2019.

Data sets from the UK census and Office of National Statistics: Strength it is qualitative data so can be easily analysed, objective. However, done in 2011, so may not be up to date now

Qualitative data although it is more open to interpretation, can allow us gain in depth insights and really picture what Gedling is like and the feel of it
