Genetic Diversity Flashcards
How can you assess genetic diversity?
-individuals of the same species will have the same genes at the same loci
-there can be differences between populations of the same species = increasing size of gene pool
What is a gene pool?
-comprised of all the alleles of all the genes within a species
What can you use to assess genetic diversity?
-proportion of polymorphic gene loci
-proportion of population that is heterozygous
What is genetic polymorphism?
-when 2 or more alleles are present at a single gene loci
What is monomorphic locus?
-doesn’t have multiple alleles
What is polymorphic locus?
-has multiple alleles
What is the proportion of polymorphic gene?
-the number of polymorphic gene loci/total number of loci investigated
What are the limitations of polymorphic gene loci?
-proportion doesn’t illustrate allele richness of a species
