Genetics Flashcards
What is Genetics?
It is the study of the ways in which hereditary information is passed from parents of offspring.
Parents and Offspring share the same similarity of what?
Traits and Characteristics
From Generation to generation there will be slight difference in what, in the traits?
Varieties
What is hereditary information carried by?
Genes
What specific location is the genes found along?
Chromosomes
When a different variety or forms of gene controlling a certain trait is called what?
Alleles
Where are Alleles found?
At the same locations on homologous chromosomes pairs.
What is Homozygous?
Alleles for a certain trait are the same.
What is Heterozygous (also know as Hybrid)?
Alleles for a certain trait are the different.
Alleles are separated during what process?
Meiosis (aka segregation)
Alleles recombine during what process?
Fertilization (aka recombination)
What happens to the alleles when meiosis is happening?
The alleles are separated independently of one another.
What does the “principal of dominance” state?
That some alleles are dominant and others are recessive.
The allele for a trait that always appears when the allele is present is called what?
Dominant Allele or Dominant Trait
The allele for a trait that is always hidden when the dominant allele is present is called what?
Recessive Allele or Recessive Trait
