Pathogen - Viral
Symptoms - Enters respiratory system then spreads to glands, Swollen parotid salivary glands (may persist for up to 1 week), transmittable 7 days prior to symptoms and 9 days after they pass.
Treatment - Vaccine
Mumps (Paramyxovirus)
Pathogen - Diploid fungus
Symptoms - Creamy white raised legions
Thrush (Candida albicans)
Pathogen - Viral
Symptoms - Small lesions around mouth
Cold Sores (HSV 1 and sometimes HSV 2)
Pathogen - Gram positive clustered cocci, catalase positive, yellow MSA (ferment mannitol)
Symptoms - Toxin causes enflamed intestinal lining (poor water absorption), vomiting, little or no diarrhea, very fast onset (1-6 hours)
Staphylococcal enterotoxicosis (Staphylococcus aureus)
Pathogen - Gram positive rods, spore forming, strict anaerobe
Symptoms - “clean” diarrhea, no vomiting, no fever, slower onset (8-24 hours)
Clostridial food poisoning (Clostridium perfringens)
Pathogen - Gram positive rods, spore forming, strict anaerobe
Symptoms - Flaccid body paralysis, ptosis of the eyelids, facial paralysis
Botulism (Clostridium botulinum)
Pathogen - Gram positive rods, spore forming aerobic or anaerobic, motile
Symptoms - No fever, either vomiting or “clean” diarrhea (not both)
Bacillus food poisoning (Bacillus cereus)
Pathogen - Gram Negative rods, no spores,
Symptoms - inflammatory diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps
Salmonellosis (Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella paratyphi
Pathogen - Gram negative rods, no spores
Symptoms - rose spots on abdomen, abdominal distention and tenderness, splenic enlargement, leukopenia
Typhoid fever - (Salmonella typhi)
Pathogen - Gram negative rods, no spores
Symptoms - Abdominal cramps, vomiting, profuse inflammatory diarrhea, protein deficiency
Shigellosis (Shigella dysenteriae)
Pathogen - Gram negative curved rods, Gram negative rods
Symptoms - Inflammatory diarrhea, rice-water stool
Cholera (Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahemolyticus)
Pathogen - Mostly gram negative rods (could be other bacteria, viral, or protozoal)
Symptoms - Nausea, vomiting, inflammatory diarrhea, bloating, malaise, abdominal pain
Traveler’s diarrhea (Mostly E. coli but could be many other things)
Pathogen - Coma or seagull shaped gram negative rods
Symptoms - Copious, foul smelling diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, arthritis
Campylobacter infection (Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter fetus)
Pathogen - Curved rods, poor gram staining (negative in structure)
Symptoms - Chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, associated with cancer
Helicobacter infection (Helicobacter pylori)
Pathogen - Rotavirus
Symptoms - Diarrhea and vomiting
Viral enteritis
