Q

Why are glaciated uplands suitable for hill-sheep farming

A
  1. Sheep are sure-footed
  2. They have thick, waterproof fleeces
  3. Sheep can survive on poor quality vegetation

Q

Why are upland glaciated area suitable for water supply

A
  • Ribbon Lakes which are formed in U-shaped valleys are natural reservoirs (a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply) that store vast quantities of water
  • Rivers and lakes can be damned. This allows water to collect behind the dam. Where a river has been damned an artificial lake is made or it allows more water to be collected in natural lakes
  • Steep slopes pull water downhill rapidly under the force of gravity. This can generate electricity in hydroelectric power stations

Q

Why are upland glaciated areas suitable for Renewable Energy

A
  • High exposed areas get lots of strong wind. This makes them ideal sites for wind farms

Q

Why are upland glaciated areas suitable for Quarrying and Mining

A
  • Hardwearing rocks found in these areas (metamorphic and igneous) are ideal for the construction of buildings and roads.
  • There are lots of exposed rocks in the area. This makes it easier to mine or quarry. The thin soil and poor vegetation cover means it is easy to clear those areas to access the rocks underneath
