termfor the portions of the Earths surface where water is solid form inclusing sea ice, lake ice, river ice + snow cover

most seasonal change:
-sea ice
-peri-glacial zones
-subject to the most seasonal change in ice volume
-land, such as tundra, covered by snow every winter

less seasonal variation:
-land covered by glaciers
-ice sheets
-land underlain by permafrost
-less seasonal variation, due to larger volumes of ice.

most common in Alpine areas:
height + cold + snowfall

vast masses of ice that bury land beneath them and are not confined to valleys.

Antarctica and Greenland ice sheets have 99% of freshwater ice.
