Q

Describe how Rodney Afif used one expressive skills to portray a character

A

Rodney Afif used the expressive skill of movement to portray the character of Osama’s father. The father is very old and fragile so as a result, Rodney moved his body around to reflect this frailty.

He weighed his body down on the walking cane, moved quite slowly and positioned his hips in a way where he is trying very hard to balance himself from the walking cane.

Rodney’s movement also highlights the character’s internal feeling to the world round him as his slow movements and observant looks make the audience recognise his appreciation to the world around him.

Q

Analyse how one area of stagecraft was applied to convey symbol

A

Lighting was used to highlight symbollic aspects of the performance. The use of high key and low key lighting was implemented to symbolise the more dramatic and comedic moments.

There was lowkey lighting, meaning the use of one or two lights that create harsh shadows, when osama finds out about his father’s death or when he is at the black market, which symbolises the darker nature of the perfomance.

In contrast however, high key lighting, which emphasis the use of multiple lights reflects the more comedic moments such as when Osama is at a nightclub or when he’s explaining the traditions of his family where he has to decline an offer three times before accepting it.
