A

reflux of gastric acid, bile and pepsin into the lower oesophagus

aetiology?

A
  • anything which causes an increase in intra-abdominal pressure
  • hiatus hernia (renders the LOS incompetent)

Pathology?

A

reflux of acid / bile / pepsin into oesophagus causes erosion of the mucosa

complications?

A
  • ulceration
  • healing by fibrosis –> stricture formation
  • glandular metaplasia –> Barrett’s Oesophagus
  • carcinoma

  • upper GI endosocpy if red flag features ie weight loss, dyspahgia, anaemia
  • if not, can diagnose through history & symptoms alone

medical:

  • antacids

  • PPI
