Limited government
Government is restricted in what it can do, and each person has rights the government can not take away. Ex. taking a farmer’s land to expand a highway and being taken to court by them so they get more money.
Federalism
Provides power between a central and regional governments. Ex. post office- state has to get permission to make a mail law.
Separation of power
Executive, legislative, and judicial powers are divided among 3 individual and coequal branches of government. Ex. executive order is the opposite of this.
Popular soverignty
People are the source of any and all government power, and government can exist only with the consent of the governed. Ex. gay marriage.
Judicial review
Right for judges to review laws to see if constitutional.

Congress creates lower courts, may impeach a judge, and senate approves or rejects appointment of judges.
