Grade 9 Flashcards

1
Q

Normal reaction force

A

The force that acts between objects and the surface they are in contact with. This force is always perpendicular (normal) to the surface.

3
Q

Drag

A

The resistance due to pushing molecules aside. It is often related to velocity and keeps increasing until the object is no longer accelerating.

Q

Newton’s Second Law

A

F= ma

Forces equals mass times acceleration. The bigger the m/a the bigger the force.

16
Q

Momentum

A

The product of an object’s mass and velocity. It’s a vector quantity (kilograms times meters per second)

17
Q

Law of conservation of momentum

A

When no external forces act on a system, the total momentum of the system stays the same. Initial momentum = final momentum

18
Q

Impulse

A

Change in momentum. Assuming that the mass doesn’t change, the changes in momentum = changes in velocity that are due to unbalanced forces acting on the object.

19
Q

Weight

A

The force an object exerts due to its acceleration in a gravitational field.
