Q

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

A

Tm: HAIs - ventilators, i.v. solutions, anesthesia equipment
CAIs - hot tubs and swimming pools; washcloths, sponges
burn and cystic fibrosis patients

A

Tularemia
Tm: direct contact (mammalian zoonosis), arthropod vectors, inhalation
resists freezing; viable for weeks in water and soil; easily aerosolized
ID = 10-50 cells
intracellular pathogen, spreads in macrophages

Q

Pertussis

A

Tm: respiratory droplets/aerosols; 0–4-year-olds
capsule bind to mucociliary escalator; pertussis toxin destroys it
mucus buildup and airway blockage
1. Catarrhal stage: nasal drainage, congestion, sneezing, coughing
2. Paroxysmal stage: sudden, violent coughing attack, followed by deep inhalation
(“whoop”)
