Earthquakes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is an earthquake?
Vibrations felt on the earths surface due to rocks suddenly slipping past one another or the release of pressure as these rocks slip past one another along a fault line.
What is a fault plane?
The surface that rocks slip past one another on.
What is the focus/hypocentre?
The location below the earths surface where the earthquake starts.
What is the epicenter?
The point on the earths surface that lies directly above the focus where the vibrations originate from; most destruction here)
Magnitude?
Strength or force of earthquake
Seismic wave
Vibrations generated by an earthquake explosion or similar energetic source that are transmitted within the earth or along its surface.
What are the motions tectonic plates can do?
Slip slide and bump
Describe the movements of the earth: convergent, divergent plate boundaries and transform faults.
C- plates moving towards each other ( slide underneath each other forming mountains and volcanoes)
D- plates moving away from each other (ocean floors)
T- plates sliding past one another causing vibrations.
Damage if an earthquake depends on..
How strong it was
How long it lasted
How close the place was to the epicenter
How strong the structures were
Give an example of an earthquake in the Caribbean.
2021 Haiti, 7.2 magnitude
