Gravitational Fields Flashcards
What is Newtons Universal Law of Gravitation?
The force of attraction between two point masses is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of their distances
What is meant by a point mass?
Assuming that a mass is infinitesimally small
What is the equation for the force of a gravitational field?
F=GMm/r^2
What are gravitational fields?
A model to help explain/calculate the force in an area
What is a gravitational force?
The force of attraction between 2 or more point masses. It’s a fundamental force
What is the equation for a gravitational field?
g= GM/r^2
Is a field a vector or a scalar?
Vector
What law does the magnitude of the force obey?
The inverse square law
Where is the field strength the greatest on solid bodies?
On the surface
Why do astronauts float in the space station?
Because they are in freefall
What is Keplers 3rd law of planetary motion?
The period of an orbit squared is proportional to the radius cubed
What is the equation for orbital velocity?
V^2=GM/r
What is the equation for time period of an orbit?
T^2=4pi^2r^3/GM
What must a body in a geostationary orbit do?
Have a 24 hour period and lie on the earths equatorial plane
What is the equation for gravitational potential energy?
GPE=-GMm/r
