Greece wine law

A
  • PDO = Quality wine (POP, OPAP, OPE)
  • PGI = Regional wines and any of the wines of “Traditional designation” which have an established geographical indication such as Verdea and 15 Retsinas
  • Varietal wines = Entitled to bear an indication of their vintage and varietal composition but not of their geographical indication
  • Table wines (Epitrapezios Inos El) = All wines which are neither PDO or PGI or varietal wines. No vintage dating or grape variety indication

What is Retsina PGI?

A

Appellation for white wine from Savatiano and Roditis grapes and flavored with the addition of pine resin

As per Greek law, it cannot be labeled with a vintage

* VDN: wines must be fortified during fermentation with alcohol of vinous origin of a minimum 95% alc
* VDL: wines must be fortified prior to fermentation with alcohol of vinous origin of a minimum 95% alc
* Naturally sweet wine: dried grapes must obtain a minimum 300g/L sugar content before vinification and must be for a minimum of three years prior to release

A
  • Dry white wines and dried grapes sweet wines
  • Minimum 75% Assyrtiko + Athiri and Aidani
  • Vin Santo, min 51% Assyrtiko, dried grapes to 370g/L must weight, aged for min 2 years in cask and 13%+ alcohol. Residual sugar between 200-300gr/L
