What was the Acropolis?
The urban & religious centre of a city
Where was an Acropolis built?
At the highest point
What was the Asty?
The civic centre - had the markets & public buildings, and was the city’s base
What was the Chora?
The countryside that surrounds the polis
What road connected the whole city?
The Panathenaic Way - Spanned from the city gates up to the temple in the Acropolis
What was the Panathenaic Way used for?
Mainly used for processions in festivals honouring Athena
What was the Agora?
Political, economic, & social centre of the polis
Uses of the Agora?
Kind of a town square:
- Gathering space
- Few market stalls
What was the west side of the Agora used for?
Administration/political centre
What was the south side of the Agora used for?
Official commercial centre
What was the Bouleuterion?
A senate house - had statues of deities to protect the legal proceedings & theatre-style seating
What was the Metroon?
An old Bouleuterion house turned temple - shows the connection between religion & politics
What was the Tholos/Skias?
HQ of the Boule - would share meals inside
What was South Stoa 1 used for?
A public market building where business was conducted - suggested by large amount of bronze coins found
What was The Hephaisteion?
A temple dedicated to Hephaestus in association with Athena
