Group 1&2 reactions Flashcards
How does the metal react with oxygen?
Metal+oxygen -> metal oxide
2Na (s) + ½O 2 (g) -> Na2O (s)
How does the metal react with chlorine?
Metal+chlorine-> metal chloride
Reactions with acids
Metal + acid -> Metal salt + hydrogen
What can make reactions with acids dangerous?
If the acid is highly reactive
What determines the salt produced?
The acid used
Eg-sulfuric acid gives a sulfate, HCl gives a chloride
Reaction with water
Metal + water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Why would state symbols sometimes not be used for group 2 hydroxides?
Their solubility varies
What is the solubility trend for group 2 hydroxides?
Become more soluble as you go down the group
What is the solubility trend for group 2 sulfates?
Decrease in solubility as you go down the group
Reactions with carbonates
Metal carbonate -> metal oxide + carbon dioxide
Group 1 reactions with nitrates
Metal nitrate ->Metal nitrite + oxygen
Group 2 reactions with nitrates
Metal nitrate -> Metal oxide + nitrogen dioxide + oxygen
Which group undergoes greater thermal decomposition?
Group 2, and Lithium
