Group 2 Flashcards
What happens to reactivity down group 2?
Increases as ionisation energy decreases
What structure does CaO form?
NaCl structure, with 6 oxides around each cation
What structure is the BeO oxide?
Wurzite with 4 oxides around each cation
Is Be(OH)2 acidic or basic?
Neither its amphoteric
Why is MgSO4 more soluble than BaSO4?
Solubility decreases down the group as the SO4 anion is large the lattice energy will be weak for the whole group, Enthalpy becomes the dominant factor which decreases as cations get bigger.
Whats more soluble, MgSO4 or BaSO4?
MgSO4, solubility decreases down the group
Why does group 2 form more coordination complexes than group 1.
They have a higher charge density.
How is magnesium produced industrially?
Seawater and dolomite
How is Na produced industrially?
The downs process
Why does Be have anomalous behaviour and what is this behaviour?
Its really small! forms an amphoteric hydroxide, electron deficient hydride and polymeric hydrides.
