Guillain Barre Syndrome Med Surg Flashcards
What is guillian barre syndrome
A disorder in the PNS. Causes inflammation and delymination of axon. Causes acute paralysis without reflexes. Occurs after infection
What causes GB
2/3 of cases are caused by infection that occurred 3 weeks prior. Most usually respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.
What does GB affect
Immune system and attacks PNS
What disease has been linked to cause GBS
Zinka Virus
GBS mortality rate
2-10%
GBS patho
Immune system attacks the mylenth sheath in the peripheral nerves.
First stage of GBS
Acute stage. Onset of clinical manifestation of peripheral nerve delymenation, edema and inflammation. This phase last around 4 weeks.
GBS 2nd stage
Plateau phase. Delymenation stops. Can last a few days to weeks.
GBS 3 rd phase
Recovery phase. Remylantion occurs and axons grow back. Gradual improvement in signs and symptoms.
GBS clinical manifestations
Symmetrical ascending motor weakness and paralysis that starts in the feet and extends to the trunk and arms. Parenthesis, shoulder back and buttock pain. After a few days deep tendon reflexes will be absent
Key finding in GBS
Diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes. Areflexia.
How often is there cranial involvement in GBS
85%
What percent of GBS develop respiratory impairment
40% this is due to weakness in the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
How is patients GCS effected with GBS
Remains intact.
GBS diagnosis
Symptom based, recent infection, lumbar puncture with increased protein. Electromyoghraphy slowed nerve conduction soon after patient develops paralysis
