Gymnosperms Flashcards
1
Q
What is a disadvantage of homospory?
A
The new sporophyte is dependent on a tiny gametophyte after zygote development
2
Q
How do you combat homospory?
A
The megagametophyte is retained inside the maternal sporophyte - as an ovule
3
Q
Explain seeds of conifers
A
- Seeds are in cones and not enclosed in a fruit
- Seeds develop on woody scales - bears 2 ovules each
4
Q
Explain pollen cones
A
- Contain microsporangia > produces microspores > become microgametophytes = pollen
- Dispersed by wind
- Pollen production is during spring
5
Q
Explain the life cycle of a conifer
A
6
Q
Explain other gymnosperm seeds
A
Serotinous cones: cones that require heat to release seeds
Aril: individual seeds surrounded by a fleshy seed coat (ex: yew, gingko and juniper berries)
