Hazards Flashcards
What’s a natural hazard?
A natural event in which can cause harm to people and the environment
What effects hazard risk?
Wealth- poor people might have to live in hazardous places
Education- people might not be aware of the risk
Location- some areas are more at risk than others
What’s the thickest layer of the earth?
Mantle
Differences between oceanic and continental crust
Continental is less dense than the oceanic,
Continental is thicker than the oceanic,
Both from different rocks
What happens to temperature and density as you move onwards from the core?
Becomes cooler and less dense
Direction of plate movements:
Conservative- side by side
Destructive- oceanic subducted beneath continental plate
Constructive- move apart
What happens at destructive plate boundaries?
Earthquakes due to the friction of the plates and volcanos as the oceanic plate subducts and melts the magma erupts through the surface
Where do the most destructive eruptions occur?
Destructive boundaries
What’s the scale for measuring earthquakes?
Richter scale
What’s subduction?
Dense plate is forced beneath a less dense plate
