Head And Neck Flashcards
What are the 8 bones of the viscerocranium?
Mandible, maxilla, zygoma, volmer, lacrima, nasal, palatine, inferior nasal concha
What are the 6 bones of the neurocranium?
Frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal, sphenoid, ethmoid
Bones of the calvaria are made by what process? What is the calvaria?
Calvaria is the skull (frontal, occipital and parietal bones). It’s formed by intramembranous ossification.
What are fontanelles?
Soft spots, membrane covered areas of the skull where sutures form
When do fontanelles usually disappear?
At 7-19 months
What do bulging fontanelles usually indicate?
Increase cranial pressure
What comprises the anterior cranial fossa?
Frontal bone, crista galli and cribiform plate of ethmoid, lesser wings of sphenoid
What 2 structures does the anterior cranial fossa hold?
The frontal lobe and cranial nerve 1 (CN I)
What structures make up the posterior cranial fossa?
Sphenoid, temporal and occipital bones
What three structures are within the posterior cranial fossa?
Occipital lobe, cerebellum and the brainstem
What four ‘holes’ can be found in the posterior cranial fossa?
Internal auditory meatus, jugular foramen, foramen magnum, hypoglossal canal
What two bones make up the middle cranial fossa?
Sphenoid and temporal bones
What 9 structures are within the middle cranial fossa?
Sella tursica, chiasmic groove, optic canal, superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, foramen spinsosum, foramen lacerum, cavernous sinus
What 6 things reside within the middle cranial fossa?
Pituitary, optic chasm, optic nerve, internal carotid artery, cranial nerves (3,4, V1, V2, 6) and the temporal lobe.
What 5 nerves are within the middle cranial fossa?
CN III, IV, V1, V2, VI
What are the five sinuses?
Ethmoid, sphenoid, maxillary, frontal, temporal
1/5 of facial injuries involve which bone?
The mandible
What type of joint are the teeth?
Gomphosis joints
What structures on the mandible hold the teeth?
Alveolar processes
What nerve innervated the gums/teeth?
Alveolar nerve
What type of joint is the temporomandibular joint?
A synovial joint
The condylar portion of the mandible articulates with what structures?
Mandibular fossa and the articular eminence of the temporal bone.
Does the temporomandibular joint have a meniscus?
Yes- an articular disc of cartilage
What nerve innervated the TMJ?
The mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
The hyoid bone is suspended from what structure by what ligament?
Suspended from the styloid process by the stylohyoid ligament
What five structures are on the hyoid bone?
Body, 2 greater and 2 lesser cornua (spines)
