What is animal health?
The absence of disease or the normal functioning of an organism and normal behaviour based on observation
What do you check in a health check?
eyes
ears
nose
mouth (gums, teeth, tongue)
body condition (skin, fur, feathers, hair, weight)
legs
feet (nails, claws)
anus (faeces, vent/cloaca)
genitals (urine)
tail
behaviour
mobility
Why monitor animal health?
animal welfare act 2006
informing people of any sudden illness/injury
checking for illness/injury
treating illnesses early
treating injury before it gets worse
keeping an eye on sudden signs of illnesses/injury
information for vets
What are the two types of health checks?
visual
physical
What are the different colour gums an animal could have?
pink
white
blue
red
yellow
What do pink gums indicate?
the animal is healthy
What do white gums indicate?
poor blood flow
anaemia
What do blue gums indicate?
lack of oxygen
animal is close to dying
What do red gums indicate?
an infection
What do yellow gums indicate?
issue with the liver
jaundice
