Heart 2 182 --> Flashcards
cardiac cycle
atria simultaneously contract
ventricular diastole
last 1/2 of cycle, all chambers are relaxing
atrial diastole
contraction of ventricles simultaneously
arterial flutter
atria attempt to beat at a rate of 200-400 times per minute
atrial fibrillation
chaotic muscle impulses in atria, leading to an irregular heart rate
cardiac arrhythmia
any abnormality in the rate, regularity or sequence of the cardiac cycle.
premature ventricular contractions
from stress, stimulants (caffeine, or sleep deprivation
only dangerous in great numbers
“skip a beat” or “jumping”
ventricular fibrillation
rapid repetitious movement of the ventricular muscle, replacing normal contraction
life threatening
cardiac arrest
cessation of cardiac activity
irregularity in pumped motions, circulation stops
heart murmur
abnormal heart sounds;
caused by usually turbulence of by valve leakage
all should be checked out
bradycardia
atypically slow heartbeat; less than 50 bpm
athletes bradycardia
beneficial adaptation resulting from muscular heart, healthy circulatory system, excellent lung capacity
foramen ovale
passageway for blood during fetal life from right atrium to left; pushing flap, septum primum
septum primum
prevents blood in fetal life from returning from the left atrium to the right
fossa ovalis
shallow depression in interatrial wall after fossa ovale is closed
patent foramen ovale
perforated ross ovalis; atrial septal defect
