Hematologic & Lymphatic Mod 5 Flashcards
What is plasma?
Pale yellow mixture of water, proteins and salts, acts as a carrier for blood cells, nutrients, enzymes and hormones
What are WBC’s?
Leukocytes that are the body’s primary defence against infection
What are platelets?
Thrombocytes
Very small colourless fragments that help stop bleeding
What are RBC’s?
Disc shaped cells containing hemoglobin, deliver oxygen to the cells, pick up carbon dioxide and remove it from tissues
What is anemia?
Condition that is caused when there is not enough RBC’s in the body, decrease in hemoglobin and hematocrit
What is hypovolemic anemia?
Blood loss caused by a hemorrhage
What is pernicious anemia?
Also known as B12 deficiency
Has an appearance of a burning tongue
What is aplastic anemia?
Bone marrow doesn’t make enough blood products
What are the steps of coagulation?
- Injury to a blood vessel
- Release of prothrombin activator
- Platelet plug is made
- Prothrombin turns to thrombin
- Thrombin reacts with fibrinogen to make fibrin
What is thrombocytopenia?
Bone marrow doesn’t make enough platelets
What is thrombocythemia?
Bone marrow makes too many platelets
What is lymphangitis?
Inflammation of one or more lymphatic vessels usually from a staph infection
What is lymphedema?
Disorder caused by lymph fluid in the soft tissue
Define heart failure
Heart cannot pump enough blood to sustain the body’s metabolic needs
