Melanin (will go black)

Amyloid (apple green birefringent)

Copper (golden brown against a blue counterstain)

Iron (goes blue) - AKA Perl’s stain
What does Cytokeratin stain for?
Epithelial cell (e.g. in a carcinoma)
What does CD45 stain for?
Lymphoid cells
What does the Ziehl-Neelson stain detect?
Acid-fast bacillus - TB (goes red against a blue background)
What does the Auramine stain detect?
TB (bright yellow)
What does Gomori’s methanamine silver stain detect?
Pneumocytic jirovecii (glying saucer shaped cysts)

Cryptosporidium parvum
What does the India Ink stain detect?
Cryptococcus neoformans (yeast cells surrounded by halos)

Chlamydia psittaci (cytoplasmic inclusions)
